One Green Plant
Vegan jerky made out of mushrooms … yes, please! Pan’s Mushroom Jerky, based out of Vancouver, Washington, has created a jerky made entirely out of mushrooms, based on a Malaysian family recipe. Pan’s is currently wow-ing attendees at the Winter Fancy Food Show in San Francisco, with Mercury News saying the jerky, “blew us away with its umami flavor and chewy texture.”
The jerky is a good source of fiber and vitamin D and runs $9 for a 2.2-ounce bag at Whole Foods or via their online store.
Ten years ago, go-to jerky snacks were salty, processed, and artificially flavored. But now, thanks to companies such as Pan’s Mushroom Jerky, our snack choices are evolving towards more sustainable, plant-based options as more people are becoming aware of the impact that meat and dairy have on the planet, animals, and their health.
Factory farming is one of the most environmentally destructive industries on the planet and we need to start shifting away from animal proteins and towards plant-based alternatives, if we want to create a truly sustainable food system that will be able to support our growing population. Thanks to forward-thinking companies like Pan’s Mushroom Jerky, we are seeing the food space evolve towards more sustainable (and delicious!) options.
